The JAS Guidebook

The JAS Guidebook is a comprehensive manual for Studio Art Students who are participating in the annual Juried Art Show.

While the Juried Art Show is limited to Studio Art majors & minors, non-Studio students, as well as community members who are interested in exhibiting their artwork can submit to the College Royal Visual Art Show, which runs concurrently with JAS.

Coordinators

Each year, three coordinators are chosen through a formal election hosted through the Fine Arts Network. These three coordinators are responsible for fundraising, planning, organizing, and hosting the Juried Art Show in its entirety, supported by faculty, technicians, dedicated volunteers, and the Fine Arts Network itself. Acting as a coordinator for the Juried Art Show counts for a 0.5 Experiential Learning credit and requires a level of commitment comparable to other upper-year studio courses. The coordinators are also responsible for maintaining the JAS legacy! This includes updating the JAS coordinator manual, passing along documents and information to the next coordinators, and archiving and documenting processes throughout the year.

If students are interested in pursuing a coordinator role, we recommend getting involved as a volunteer and taking part in FAN events or becoming a member of the FAN executive team!

Silent Auction

Up until 2020 and the arrival of COVID-19, the long-standing tradition of the JAS Silent Auction was hosted in person. While that formatting has been subject to change throughout pandemic conditions, the Silent Auction remains the most important fundraiser of JAS. Students and faculty participate in the Silent Auction by submitting works and donating a portion of the proceeds when sold back to JAS.

The 55th Annual Silent Auction will continue to follow the pandemic-initiated format of being hosted over the course of two weeks through the JAS Instagram account. Works by students and faculty are posted in groups, and the bidding period for each group lasts two days. This year, submissions for the Silent Auction take place from January 16th-27th, and the auction itself will be held online from February 6th-17th.

JAS

JAS Spot Sales

In order to participate in the Juried Art Show and have works evaluated for the chance to earn awards, students must purchase spots in the Zavitz building in which to display their work. This is another crucial fundraiser for JAS. Spot Sales will take place two weeks prior to JAS, and is held in person in the Zavitz Lobby. Only cash is accepted. Each student is permitted to purchase two spots; we recommend surveying the building and the spot sales map ahead of time to get your desired spot!

Students participating in Jr. Jas do not have to pay for spot sales.

JAS Install night

Installation of works for the Juried Art Show takes place on the Thursday night before JAS Friday. This year, this will be March 16th. Installation begins at 5:30pm and concludes at midnight. JAS coordinators are available until then to assist with install questions, and advise on fire safety. Works that do not subscribe to fire safety standards will be removed. It is the responsibility of each student to make sure their works are installed according to the current guidelines. Students are responsible for hanging their own work and must bring their own supplies. Assistance is provided by our wonderful volunteers to ensure that work is installed to a professional standard. School equipment that is needed must be booked out by students in advance- please speak to your department’s technicians for assistance.

Jr. JAS

Junior JAS is the little sibling of JAS. It is open to first and second year students, and is juried by MFA students. It takes place on the same day as JAS and awards are also available at the awards ceremony!

Juried Awards - The Top Ten + Honourable Mentions

On March 17th, three external jurors will spend the day evaluating and selecting their top ten works, as well as ten honourable mentions. Prize money is given out by JAS, and first place is a cash prize of $1000. The top ten works are also exhibited each year in the Zavitz Gallery in the form of a Top Ten show, which is curated and organized by volunteers.

Faculty Awards

Faculty awards not only based on work submitted to JAS but students work throughout years in program. However, to be eligible for faculty awards, students must participate in JAS. Each department participates in choosing students, and an overall student is chosen for the faculty award.

The jury for the photography awards is comprised of faculty members and sessional instructors teaching in the photography department. While the number of awards varies from year to year, the jury usually awards two prizes, chosen from the photo-based work on display. The jury looks for original work with a clear intent that displays a high level of ambition and execution.
